One And Half Inch Above
Scene 01
01/01. You can come to this table if you want. Here is sufficient place. How much place does a man need after all? You may have some trouble.
01/2. No, I will have no trouble. Of course you can keep silent if
you want. I myself like to keep silent.
। A ship ।
01/3. One can keep silent and can talk
also simultaneously. Very few know it. I have been doing it for years. (I cant do it) Of course, not you. You are now young. At
your age, to keep silent means to keep silent, and to talk means to talk. Both
the things cannot happen together.
01/4. You are drinking with small mug. Probably you did not get addicted as yet. I acknowledged you as soon as I saw you that you do not belong to this place. I recognize all of them who come here at this time. You can't talk to them. They have already drunk a lot. They come here for their last beers. All other pubs are got closed, and they cannot go anywhere else.
01/5. They expire very soon, on the table, outside on the road, in the local train. At so many times, I have had to carry them to their homes. Do they recognise you later?
Of course they don't even recognize me on the morrow. Don't misapprehend me. I referred not to you. I have seen you here for the first time. Coming here, you sat down quietly by an isolated table. I did mind it.
01/6. No. Don't be weary. I will not
impose myself upon you. We can sit alone with each other and even be alone on
our own beers.
01/7. It is a little bit difficult at
my age, because every old man is scared more or less. It is a grace to
grow gradually and gracefully. It is not within the reach of everybody. It does not
come by itself. To grow old is an art which has to be learnt with much labour
and immense perseverance. What is your age?
01/8. What did you say? What is your age? My age? Please guess. You will be 52 years old. Oh no sir! You are trying to please me deliberately. Well you definitely pleased me. (Pause) If I take a beer to celebrate this pleasure, you would not mind would you?
01/9. And you? Will you not
take? Do not
insist. No,
I will not insist. Everyone should have the freedom to choose his wine,
his wife and his life. You can choose them once only. Thereafter we just repeat
them, what once we drank or once we lived.
01/10. Do you believe in another life?
I mean, life even after death. I hope you will not give me an absurd answer
that you do not believe in any religion.
Scene 02
02/1, Look, I myself am a Sikh. But I
find this belief of yours (to be) very interesting that a man does not die
completely even after his death. We live a life, then second life, then third life
and so on the series/serial continues.

Just as childhood, youth and old age are attributed to the Atma through this body, even so the Atma attains another body. (A wise man should not get deluded about this.)

completely free from disorder. Therefore thinking so, we should not
grieve. ।। 25 ।।
02/2. I often think about this problem
at night. You know, at my age, one does not get to sleep easily. One requires
an ounce of careless, and half an ounce of fatigue (exertion) for getting to sleep. If you
have neither, (then) you can make them up by drinking one and a half ounce of
beer. That is why I come here every day, at midnight, since the last 15 years
regularly. Do you not
sleep?
02/3. I do sleep a little or more, but
I get up at around 3 o'clock. Thereafter, I cannot stay at home alone. /3
o'clock at night is a terrible time. I tell you by my own experience. At 2
o'clock it seems to be night, and at 4 o'clock it begins to be morning. But at
3 o'clock it seems to you, that you are neither at this side nor at the other.
It always seems to me that if there is a time for death to come, it is this
very time.
Do you live alone?
02/4. No (gentleman). I do not live
alone at all. You know, that pensioners have their own hobbies? I have got a
cat, living with me for years.
02/5. Now look, here, drinking
beer, I am talking to you a lengthy talk. And there, she might be sitting at
the door, looking at the road, waiting for me.
02/6. I do not know about you, but to
me, this perception is very consoling, that someone is (sitting on the door) waiting for me. I cannot imagine a
human, whom nobody is waiting for or who himself is waiting for nobody. The
moment you stop waiting, you stop living too (at that moment).
02/7. Cats can wait for long and very
patiently. In this sense, they are like women. But not only in this sense, but
also in that sense that they have an uncanny power to draw, and attract like
women. Fear and
fascination both.
We keep on standing fascinated when we look at a woman in solitude.
02/8. Although you might have been
scared of dogs and other animals too. But that is a fear of lower degree. You
go along the edge on one side, the dog goes away along the other. The dog
is afraid that you may strike it. And you
are scared that it may pounce on you. But
in that fear there is no mystery, no thrill, and no possibility, as that which often evokes from looking at a cat or a
snake.
02/9. This is true. And I am telling
you by experience that you cannot know the cat till the last, like women, even
if you have been living with her for years. Not because she deliberately hides
something within her, but because you yourselves dare not open the gates closed
inside her.
02/10. Do you not find it strange that some terror is hidden in most of the things that attract us?
ship ।
Scene 03
03/1. If you don't mind, I will take
one more beer. The pub will be closed in a while. And thereafter, not even a
single drop will be seen in the whole city, until the next morning.
03/2. Please don't be afraid. I know
the limit of my drinking. A man should drink so much so that he may rise about
an inch and a half above the ground, not more than that. Otherwise he will keep
on rising up. And this rise will end in a gutter or at a police station, which
is not a very interesting thing. But some people keep on adhering their feet to
the ground in fear. For them it is all the same whether to drink or not to
drink. The right
distance is an inch and a half.
03/3. Yes sir, the right distance
is one and a half inch. There must remain so much consciousness
that you can monitor your consciousness quenching (fading out) like a matchstick. It should be
thrown out as soon as the flame approaches the fingers. Not after that nor before that.
03/4. The secret of drinking consists
in the acknowledgement of how long to hold and when to give up. The difficulty
is that we do not acknowledge it until we rise above one and a half inches. And then
it is of no use.
03/5. Perhaps you will laugh at
listening to the fact that recognition comes only when we go beyond recognition,
acknowledgement comes only when we go beyond acknowledgement. I wouldn't mind
if you deride at my statement and reject it.
03/6. Sometimes I myself try to learn
to live with this hope, that not to be aware of many things is the way to keep
myself safe.
03/7. Gradually you learn to live with
the hope, just as you learn to live with your wife in the same house for years.
Although a suspicion sustains that she is also playing your game.
03/8. And sometimes to get rid of this
suspicion you are drawn towards the second or third lady. This is the beginning
of your being disappointed. Because the second lady, has her own secret. And
the third, has her own.
03/9. It is like the game of
chess. A door of endless possibilities opens before your opponent as soon
as you move one step. You start hoping after losing a game to win in the next
one. You forget that the next game has its own possibilities, as endless and
mysterious as the first one.
03/10. (Look.) So I say that no matter how many women you come in contact with, but in real terms, your come in contact with only one woman. Do you live with some woman?
Scene 04
04/1. Do you live with some woman? What did you say? Do you live with some woman?
No, I do not live with any woman. I
have already told you that I live alone at home, if you spare my cat. Are you married? Yes. I am married. My wife is no
longer alive. It is my assumption. Why do call it assumption? I call it assumption because I
did not see her dying. Until you yourself saw someone dying in front of your
eyes you can only assume that he or she is not alive.
04/2. You will probably laugh at, but it seems to me that until you yourself see someone whom you are familiar with, dying in front of your eyes, a feeble hope remains(persists) that she is yet alive. You will open the door and she will come to you striding from the kitchen and stand up before you. This is an illusion.
04/3. Of course this is an illusion. It
does not happen so. Hare, comes the cat instead of that which keeps on changing
the colours of her eyes laying her head on the floor behind the door.
04/4. I have heard people telling, that
time absorbs many things. Do you also think so? I do not know. But sometimes it
seems to me that it doesn't absorb as much as it sweeps away, in the dark
corners or under the carpet, so that it may not appear from outside. But
its claws are always outside. They
can nab you at any unknown moment.
04/5. Perhaps I am wandering. It
is the joy of drinking beer. You deviate from the path and keep on moving
around the same circle round and round. # Do you know the play of
children when they sit down in a circle, and only one child moves around them
with a handkerchief? It is played in your country also.
04/6. Wah. Look. However,
we are different, but the plays of children remain the same everywhere. Pauz. Our condition was also the same in
those days, because none of us was aware of when and behind whom they would lay
their trap. Each of us like a scared child would look behind again and again
whether or not they are behind him. Here came the Germans during those days.
04/7. Yes sir. Here came the Germans during those days. You might have been very young during those days. Even I was not so old. Although, we had had to work from morning till evening, due to the war. I used to be about my job like a young ox.
04/8. There is an age when everyone learns to live within the realm/limit of average happiness. He has no leisure time to look beyond that. I mean, he does not feel it until (the moment) he himself falls within that realm/circle.
04/9. Often you might have
seen that the thing that we call joy (happiness) is a thing of certain moment.
Although, it is a very solid thing in itself. But it seems to be fading out
after those moments pass away and appears as some hang over. But the thing
which we call sorrow, suffering, pain or torture is a permanent thing. (I mean),
it is not felt exactly at the time(moment) of the accident. At such a time of
an accident, we become hopeless. We are not able to find a ready-made frame to
accurately fit the torture evoked from the accident.
ship ।
04/10. The happening of an
accident is one thing. And to feel or to be able to feel the rightful aftereffects
of it for the rest of your life is quite another thing. It is impossible. It
doesn't happen so. I mean, it is not possible to imagine
the same amount of suffering what the other has felt, by putting oneself in
another's position over and over again. That would be a little less or more but
not equal to and same to that, what the other has felt. Have you seen the suffering of your wife?
Scene 05
05/1. No. I did not see my wife
undergoing suffering. When I reached home, they had already taken her away.
This was the first time in the seven-year span of my married life that I
entered into my empty house. Cat? Cat? No. It was not with me during those
days. I started taming it after several years.
05/2. The neighbours of the
neighbouring houses were of course watching me, peeping through their windows.
It was but natural too. I myself used to look through my window at those whose
relatives were arrested by the Gestapo-police and were taken in a closed van.
But I never imagined that one day I should return home and my house would be
vacant (barren).
ship ।
05/3. Look, I want to ask you one thing
- is it not strange/odd that when we ever hear of death, torture or accident of
someone or we learn it in a newspaper, we never get the idea that these things
can happen or could have happen with us also. It always seems to us that these
are for others.
05/4. Aha. I am happy that you're
having/taking one more beer. After all, you cannot stay all the night in front
of an empty glass. What did you see then? I knew, you would definitely
ask this question. If you had not asked, I would have been surprised. # Sir Initially I myself could
not understand anything. I had already told you, that one becomes hopeless at
such a moment of accident. He cannot even anticipate his torture properly.
05/5. The belongings of my wife
were scattered all around - clothes, books, old newspapers. The drawers of the
shelves and the table were laid open and every little or big thing inside them
was lying on the floor at sixes and sevens. The sewing machine, the gifts of
Baisakhi, the old photo albums.
Do you know, how many things are got
hoarded by themselves after marriage. It seemed that they had searched
everything whether vey very small. They had searched every nook and
corner. There was not even a single item which they spared untouched.
05/6. At that night I kept on sitting
in my room. The bed of my wife was laid empty. There were her
handkerchief, matchbox and the packet of cigarette under the pillow. She always
smoked cigarette before sleeping. In the beginning I used to be annoyed at her
this habit. But gradually I became used to it/apt of it.
05/7. By the side of the
bed, on the tripod, there was her book which she had been reading during those
days. She had tagged her clip to the page for marking where she had stopped
reading at the previous night. There was the smell of her hair attached
to the clip.
05/8. (Do) you know, how
the memory of minor details calls back even after years? Probably this is right
as well. We always think about big and sensational/emotional things before marriage. But
these big things slip out of our hands after marriage due to (our) living together
for a many years. Their remain some trifles as (our)
daily routine habits, looking superficial from outside and our mutual
differences, which we never say to others due to shame. But everything
seems like lonely without that.
05/9. At That night I kept on
sitting in the room alone among the belongings of my wife. Perhaps I was not
within myself at that time. I could not apprehend anything. She was not at
home, it was merely a truth which I could understand. But why they arrested
her, this terrible secret was beyond me. After all, why is my wife in
particular? I kept asking myself this question frequently at that night.
05/10. You will be surprised that I
suspected my wife for the first time in the seven years span of my married
life, as if she had kept something hidden from me, a thing which had nothing to
do with me.
Scene 06
06/1. Later on, I came to know that the
Gestapo-police was set to trap her for a long time. She was found to have some
illegal pamphlets and leaflets which were being distributed anonymously among
the public during those days. This was the serious crime, in the opinion of the
German authorities. The police had recovered all those things from the room of
my wife. And you might find it very interesting that I did not know anything
about them.
06/2. Before that night, she and I were
living in the same room loving each other. And there were some things in that
room that were her secret which belong to none of my share. Don't you find it
interesting that they knew my wife better than I myself did?
06/3. Wait. Let me finish my
glass. Then I will give you company. They will close after some time and then. So early?. No! not so early. Drink.
Drink relaxed and comfortably. The joy of drinking consists in drinking relaxed
and comfortably. There is a proverb in our language. We should drink up to the
fill, because we will not be in this world after a hundred years. One hundred years.
It is a long span of time. Don't you think? I doubt, whether any of
us will survive so long. The man eats, drinks, lives, and one day, suddenly, he
dies. Burst! To die is a terrible thing.
06/4. No sir! To die is not the terrible thing. Millions of
people die every day and you don't even take any care of it. The terrible thing
is that the dead man carries his secret, forever. And we cannot do anything
against him. In the other way he becomes free from us.
06/5. At that night I kept on
wandering from one room of my house to another. You will probably laugh at that
I was the next man after the police, who had conducted another search operation
of the belongings of my wife. I had searched everything elaborately. I was not able
to believe that she would not leave anything behind her for me, by dint of
which I could be able to approach something which was associated with me
too. Her wedding dress, some letters kept in the drawer of the
dressing-table, which I had written to her before marriage, some feathers and
stones, which she used to collect by hobby. Just look, after a seven years long
span of my married life, I was groping things of my wife that night, as if I
was not a husband, but a professional servant of the detective police.
06/6. I was not able to believe, that
now I shall not be able to ask her anything thereafter. She will not be able to escape from his hands, I knew
it. I never found anyone coming back whom they ever took away. But at
that night, I was not more scared of the fact that she will be close to death
than that I shall never be able to know the whole truth about her. The Death
will lock her secret forever and she will not leave a single clue behind her,
for me by dint of which I will be able to open that lock.
06/7. On the morrow at night they
knocked on my door. I was already sitting in wait for them. I knew that they
would come. If my wife had confessed to them, they might not had needed me
(they might not had my necessity). But I knew that my wife herself would not
speak even a single word from her mouth. I have not been aware of her secret,
but I was aware of her habits. She knew to keep silent. No matter how severe
the torture is. Did you see his torture with your own eyes?
06/8. No sir I did not see her torture
with my own eyes, but I can guess/assume a little bit. The first question they
asked me was very clear. Am I her husband? I could only answer to their
this question in a yes. The rest of the questions were beyond me. But
they were not set to leave me easily. They laughed at me when I replied that I
knew nothing about those activities of my wife. They thought, that I was
evading to save my skin.
। A ship ।
06/9. They carried me to a different
cell. Throughout the week, they kept me asking the same type of question in
different ways. What did I know about my wife? Where did she go? Whom did you
meet? Who gave her leaflets?
06/10. I cannot tell you anything about
the methods they used to draw any answer from me. You will not be able to guess
even a fraction of it, even if I tell you elaborately.

Scene 07
07/1. They beat me till I lost
consciousness. But they had immense patience. They used to wait till I came
back to sense and then the same sequence started. Same old questions, and
endless torture.
07/2. They could not rely upon me that
I, who had been living with my wife in the same house for several years - knew
nothing about her secret activities. They thought that I was befooling them. I
was trying to throwing dust into their eyes. They used to beat you. That was torture
you.
07/3. No sir, It was not my
torture that they beat me. My torture was that I had got nothing with me to
answer their questions. To say, I had got some very simple household affairs, which probably every woman does
with her husband.
07/4. I could not even imagine that she
was living another life, apart from me. A life outside of me, far from
me, a life that had nothing to do with me.
07/5. Do you not find it ridiculous
that if they had not arrested her, then I would always consider that my wife
was the one that I knew?
07/6. You know? Those were the few last days of the
war? And
the Gestapo did not
let their prey escape easily. My wife did not confess anything till the
last. They abandoned hope with her, but they considered me to be a raw.
07/7. Perhaps they didn't want to
kill me. Although
they did not even spare me of the pain that they could give me which was hardly
less than death. They
would leave me when I fainted or when they themselves became tired.
07/8. Even I did not confess anything. But it was not my courage. As a matter of fact I had got nothing with me to confess.
07/9. Do you know? At the first night when I did not find my wife at home I had been heart. It seemed to me that she had deceived me by keeping me in the dark. This perception heart me again and again that even my wife did not consider me to have been faithful. But later on while I was undergoing unbearable anguish and suffering, by the Gestapo police, I became grateful to her that she told me nothing about her secret. In the other way she saved me.
07/10. I have not been able to
conclude as yet that whether I could have been able to keep silent if I were
aware of the secret of my wife. Think how much my torture would have been
increased if the option of confession were open to me.
Scene 08
08/1, You can endure/tolerate even
a grave torture under compulsion. But if you know that you can get rid of that
torture at any moment, provided you have to betray someone your wife, your
father, your brother or someone your beloved one, then it is difficult for me
to say anything about whether you will not opt that option after a certain
degree of torture.
08/2. There is no torture greater
than the open choice of confession. It sometimes seems to me that my wife never
revealed her secret to me to save me from this torture of decision of
confession.
08/3. See, it is often said that there is no hiding in love. It is crystal clear like a mirror glass. I think this is a delusion. The meaning of love is not only to open yourself fully but also to hide yourself a little so that you can spare others from your personal dangers. # Every woman understands it. And because she has more power of love, so she dares also to hide herself.
08/4. Don't you think so? May be,
I am wrong. But when I do not get to sleep at night, then I often get a little
releaf, thinking that…
Lusty sip
08/5. Let it go, I cannot make you understand. I did not expect when I invited you to my desk that I shall be able to make you understand. Did you see your wife again after that? What did you say? Did you see your wife again after that?
08/6. No, I did not see my wife again theirafter. One afternoon when I was returning home from my office I came across the poster. Often those posters were stuck on the walls of the city on the every third-fourth day. There were thirty forty names of those who were shot dead during the previous couple of nights. When I noticed the name of my wife, I felt a little bizarre that there could be the face of my wife behind that little name.
08/7. I have already told you that until you yourself see someone dying before your eyes, you do not believe that he is no longer alive. There remains a misty hope that you will open the door and she will come to you striding from the kitchen, but.
08/8 Look, I have begun to repeat my words. The joy of drinking beer is that you keep going around the same circle. Round and Round and Round.
08/9. Are you going? Just
wait. Let me buy some pieces of food for my cat. She will be waiting
hungry and thirsty for me by then. May I join you?
08/10. No sir, no, you need not
come with me. My house is not far away. And I know my limit of drinking. I have
told you just one and a half inches up.
